A grand time was had by all!
If you missed the first “Dance at the Plaza” this past Saturday, August 27th, you missed the best party of the year in Monument. The evening was filled with great food, friendship, and dancing of course! The event was held to raise funds for two of our local charities with half of the proceeds going to Monument Hill Sertoma for their Hearing Dog Program and the other half will benefit Tri Lakes Cares for their new building fund.
The idea for the dance was spun off by Karen Evans of A Chick and A Windshield who really enjoys dancing. She floated the idea past the other members of the Greater Monument Plaza Merchants Association in May of this year. By June the team was moving full force to accomplish the overwhelming task of organizing such a large event.
Special thanks for planning and executing such a fine event goes to Karen Evans along with the Leadership Team members: Fay Vogel of Rosie’s Diner, Sandy Bauers of Bauers Massage, P.J. Harshman of Two Timers Fine Consign, Genny Natvig of Classic Floors, and Lela Nemmers of Colorado National Bank. These ladies put in over 300 hours combined time to organize the event and their precision teamwork resulted in a well run, fun filled event.
The event brought in over $10,500.00 in sponsorships, gate receipts, raffle ticket sales, food and beverage sales, and other fundraising venues. Over $6,000.00 in sponsorships were raised from the following businesses to get the event going. Rosie’s Diner, Bauers Massage, Colorado National Bank, Classic Floors, First National bank, What About Dinner, First Class Pack & Ship, King Soopers, Red Rock Realty, Keller Williams Realty, Tri Lakes Printing, A Chick & A Windshield, Streak Free Wiper Blades, Monument Cork & Bottle Liquors, Two Timers Fine Consign, Curves for Women, Heatwaves Tanning Salon, Dominos Pizza, Bella Art & Frame, Nemmers Construction, Hope Montessori Academy, Farmer Jim, & Schwan’s. Wells Fargo Bank and Heuberger Motors were the Premier Sponsors, each donating $1,000.00 for the event.
Final figures are still being tabulated at the time of this printing but it looks like the “Dance” netted approximately $6,000.00. This means Monument Hill Sertoma and Tri Lakes Cares will each be given approximately $3,000.00 for their organization’s needs.
The band “Promises”, a septet from Colorado Springs, blew their hearts out providing great dance music for the night. They played fantastic dance music from all eras including Big Band Swing, Country and Western, Salsa tunes from “Santana”, along with a mix of 50’s – 70’s notable favorites. Marcie Hureau, “D.J. Dazzle”, gave the band needed breaks between hour long sets. She spun danceable favorites and got folks grooving with a few line dances as well.
Miss Colorado 2005, Jessica Urban, our own locally grown beauty from Black Forest came to add a little sugar to the evening. She donated her time signing autographed photos and sharing “Dollar Dances” with little girls, big girls, and men of all ages. She was attended by Tashina Beckmann, a Junior at Lewis Palmer High School for the evening who taught Jessica how to groove to “The Macarena”. Jessica was every bit as charming as you can imagine. Jessica will represent Colorado very well in the Miss America Pageant with her warm and delightful personality. She visited with everyone who stopped by to meet her and added a special twinkle to the night.
The beer garden was a big hit with those over 21. Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Coors were the spirits of choice for the event. Many enjoyed a few cold ones after dancing. Special acknowledgment goes to the Colorado National Bank staff for spending the entire 6 hours serving up the brews for the thirsty guests. Without their help the beer garden would not have happened.
The “Food Court” had sumptuous offerings from several local vendors. A.B. Tellez from The Coffee Cup served up some very tasty brats with kraut. Rosie’s Diner literally “put on the dog” by offering traditional American hot dogs and chips. The Slick Pig offered up their yummy BBQ’s brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. Domino’s was a big hit with the kids selling small pizzas and sodas. Schwan’s donated all their ice cream sales to the event and had several varieties to cool off with. No meal is complete without dessert, so cookies were provide by the King Soopers bakery. You have to have coffee to go with the cookies and this was 100% donated by our newest coffee brewer “It’s A Grind” located in the Monument Marketplace.
Raffle drawings were held throughout the evening with prizes totaling over $2,500.00 raffled off. There were so many items donated for the drawing that 18 different drawings were held with prizes being grouped together. Grouped prizes ran between $100.00 & $175.00 each. The 18 winners really got some great prizes as were evidenced by their loud whoops and hollers.
Annie Belle the Clown brought her troop of performers for the evening. Master balloon artists, face painters, and entertainers shared their talents with the younger set all night. Some of the most incredible balloon hats were crafted by the balloon artist. Many happy children giggled as their faces were painted with brightly colored paints.
The Monument Hill Sertomans, including the Lewis Palmer High School Serteen Club, gave of their time and service to staff the entire event. Over 86 adult volunteers served along with at least 32 teen volunteers to make the “Dance at the Plaza” a success. Without the help of these fantastic volunteers the evening could not have been held. Again, a big thanks is given to all who made this event possible!
The best part of the evening was the dancing! The band was specifically chosen for their incredible repertoire of music and their very personable & flexible playing style. All evening long comments were shared about how wonderful the band was. Their diversified music selections made it possible to get everyone dancing and moving. Many attendees asked when the next dance would be held. Some even wanted to hold a dance next month! The report is that plans are already underway for next year. The “Dance at the Plaza” promises to be an annual event, not to be missed, for the same time next year. So mark your calendars now for the Saturday before Labor Day 2006. You won’t want to miss this incredible Hometown Monument event! Bring your cash and your dancing shoes and help support our local charities!
